DESIGN CENTRE OF TASMANIA

Flat Stack Fold

From September 2010
FLAT STACK FOLD is a new model for product design aimed at the creation of new, commercially viable Tasmanian designed and made products. The project asks participants to work on concepts for new products that are flat-packed, stackable or foldable.

Designers will be mentored in creative problem solving, reducing the environmental footprint of product distribution, peer review processes, and market feedback/analysis. Prototypes will be taken through several different stages incorporating feedback loops from consumers. Long term, the project aims to support Tasmanian designers to go into production and take successful new products to market.

The concept of FLAT STACK FOLD is a new model for product design, aimed at creative problem solving and open discussion. Participants will be given an initial brief to come up with a concept for a product that fulfils at least one of the following criteria:
  • when flat, reduces to no more than 20% of its assembled mass;
  • when stacked, has no more than 30% of surface area outside of the initial imprint;
  • when folded, reduces to no more than 25% of its functioning size.

The brief leads designers to engage with innovative design ideas in response to a growing call for products that can be manufactured and transported with minimal environmental impact.
