DESIGN CENTRE OF TASMANIA

Headspace - New Work by Malcom Bywaters will be seen exclusively at the Design Centre, Gallery 2, from 10 September to 10 October 2006.

Malcom, a noted curator and current Director of the Academy Gallery, University of Tasmania, returns to his own work in contemporary design with this show, which displays symbolic objects constructed from household materials. Eerie fragments of leftover childhood combine with simple structural creations to make a challenging statement on the very nature of the constructed object and its meaning.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with essay by Peter Timms.

Artist insight
(with work still in progress)
"I should have the boat finished next Monday ... with the boat I think I imagine a cross between 'tug boat willy' and the realisation of the life and death struggle - clinging to a boat to survive ... the boat does have a kind of terror, tragedy about to happen, something 'not totally right' feel.
